Teachers Federal Credit Union (TFCU) recently collected more than 8,000 books to benefit children, young adults and families through programs of United Way of Long Island, such as YouthBuild Long Island, and its community partners including Long Island Cares, Long Island Head Start, Family Service League, The Gerald J. Ryan Outreach Center, Education & Assistance Corp. (EAC) and Pronto of Long Island. Volunteers joined the event from Long Island Head Start, Long Island Cares and Malik Melodies Sisterhood, Inc. United Way of Long Island has received $325,000 from JPMorgan Chase to support its Community Schools Project initiative, which operates in the Westbury and Freeport School Districts.  The project serves middle and intermediate school students (grades 5-8) from the Westbury Middle and the Caroline G. Atkinson Intermediate School in Freeport. The first ‘class’ of United Way of Long Island’s VetsBuild program, have completed their six-week course of study.  Graduates of the relatively new program – which is funded by a $100,000 grant from Bank of America – received green job training to help them transition into a possible career in the green construction industry.  Participants included returning military personnel who have recently served tours in Iraq and/or Afghanistan.  Between 2011 and 2016, more than one million service members are projected to leave the military, but the unemployment rate for post-9/11 veterans remains...

United Way of Long Island recently held its LIVE UNITED Celebration Luncheon which honored three leading corporate and community citizens. Held at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, the event was attending by nearly 825 professionals and raised $483,000 to benefit United Way’s Community Impact Fund which supports agencies and programs that directly address and assist those most at imminent risk in our communities.
