VetsBuild is a signature United Way of Long Island initiative dedicated to providing job training in green construction, energy-efficient weatherization, information technology, advanced manufacturing and security for veterans and their families in our community at no charge to the veteran. One out of every five veterans on Long Island struggles to find a career path that will lead to financial independence. VetsBuild represents United Way of Long Island’s commitment to addressing this problem by changing lives and building futures for our local heroes. Upon completion, certifications may be granted, as well as connections to advanced training and educational opportunities.
The VetsBuild training opportunities form a solid foundation upon which a stable and healthy life can be built:
- Training at United Way’s E3 SmartBuild Training Center, a state-of-the art facility equipped with the latest technology and equipment to provide VetsBuild students with hands-on training. Course includes 10-hour entry level OSHA certification training, basic training in home performance and weatherization, information technology courses, and financial literacy instruction. Veterans may also qualify for advanced training scholarships at local colleges and technical schools, including assistance to start their own business.
- Case Management to assist military personnel and their families secure eligible services is available through United Way's Mission United partners.
- Emergency Financial Assistance such as housing assistance, utility payments, transportation, vehicle repair, emergency home repairs and accessibility modifications for veterans with physical disabilities.
