ABOUT HOPWA
Long Island receives approximately $1.8 million annually in Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Town of Islip, who receives the funding, selected United Way of Long Island to administer the HOPWA program. These funds are used to purchase and develop green and energy-efficient housing units that provide safe, healthy, affordable, durable and sustainable permanent housing solutions for low income HIV-positive people in the region. Each housing project must meet EPA Energy Star requirements and will save significantly on operational expenses.
HOPWA houses have been developed HIV-positive individuals and their families on Long Island.
