Matt, a 38-year-old U.S. Airforce Veteran, served four and a half years in the rank of Airman First Class and worked as an Airfield Operations Technician. He found it very difficult to find a post-military career similar to the one he had in uniform. After four years of odd jobs to keep afloat, Matt found a position in the hospitality industry.
Matt realized after seven years in the role it didn't match his interests of training.
While looking into other career options, Matt came across a flyer for United Way of Long Island’s PowerUp! Wind, Solar & Renewables Career Training program. He signed up immediately, thrilled at the chance to apply his military experience. Through PowerUp!, Matt learned the benefits of renewable energy and how to install clean heating and cooling technologies, high-efficiency HVAC, heat pumps, solar panels, and EV Charging. He also learned how to create a resume and build a strong network in the renewable energy industry.
With the resources from PowerUp!, Matt put his networking skills into action. While still in the program, he interviewed with potential employers, PSEG Long Island and TRC Companies, Inc, a global energy consultant and management company. Matt was hired as an Energy Inspector with PSEG Long Island, ensuring the installation of renewable energy systems, like solar panels, and that the insulations of homes are code compliant for the safety of Long Island families.
“PowerUp! equipped me with the knowledge and skills that I needed to make a career change. Because of United Way of Long Island and Bank of America, I have a pathway to opportunity, self-sufficiency, and the American Dream,” Matt said.
