January 11, 2017 (Deer Park, NY) – United Way of Long Island is the recipient of a grant from National Grid, providing veterans, youth, and those struggling with paying their heating bills on Long Island with an opportunity to better their lives.
“We thank National Grid for their dedication to helping United Way of Long Island achieve our mission of providing critical assistance to Long Islanders in need,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President & CEO of United Way of Long Island. “They raise the bar for companies who work to give back to their local communities in powerful ways.”
“National Grid has been a long-time supporter of United Way of Long Island, recognizing the importance of providing assistance to Long Islanders across all walks of life,” said Robert DeMarinis, Vice President of Gas Operations at National Grid and United Way Board Member. “VetsBuild, YouthBuild and Project Warmth each address very different needs, but all of these initiative work toward improving the lives of our neighbors in specific and targeted ways.”
This grant is divided among three key three key United Way of Long Island programs:
- VetsBuild is a cornerstone program of United Way which provides veterans with hands-on training in green construction at the E3 SmartBuild Training Center, a state-of-the-art facility equipped with the latest technology and equipment at no cost to the veteran. Upon completion, veterans are connected with career advancement opportunities and the option to enroll in additional courses
- As part of YouthBuild Long Island, low-income young men and women ages 18 - 24 work towards their TASC diploma while learning hands-on career skills. Over the course of 10 months, students take part in a comprehensive curriculum that includes advancement in their education as well as exposure to career paths in manufacturing, technology and health and human services.
- Project Warmth is Long Island’s only non-governmental emergency fuel fund which provides one-time grants to oil and utility companies on behalf of residents facing heating emergencies. Through a network of partner agencies, struggling Long Island families can apply to Project Warmth and receive information on other local resources to help them address greater financial stability.
