National Grid Donates Vehicle to United Way of Long Island in Support of its Healthy Homes Initiative

“Everyone Deserves to Live in a Healthy Home.” This is the awareness message that United Way of Long Island is bringing to the attention of local residents and their families through its Healthy Homes Long Island initiative.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that 30 million homes across the country have indoor environmental hazards, and 6 million homes have moderate to severe infrastructure problems. To help combat these issues on Long Island, National Grid, in support of United Way’s campaign, has donated a working vehicle to the organization’s Award-Winning Housing Department that will help promote the importance of living in a healthy home as it is on route to homebuilding jobsites in Nassau and Suffolk counties.

United Way’s Healthy Homes Long Island initiative works to build and retrofit homes that are not only good for the environment, but promote the well-being of those living inside the home.  People that live in these homes have special medical needs that require better living conditions – highlighting the importance of using sustainable materials.

“National Grid is one of our key supporters, and the donation of this vehicle will be very impactful,” said Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island. “Our goal is twofold: to build new homes that set the standard for a healthy indoor environment, and spread the word to our neighbors about what changes they can make to make their home to live in a healthier environment.”

“The Healthy Homes Vehicle is the latest in a series of National Grid collaborations with United Way,” adds Robert DeMarinis, Vice President of Gas Operations at National Grid, and United Way Board Member. “The communities that we serve need to be aware of the potential hazards lurking within their own walls, and that the Healthy Homes initiative can help create a healthy place for all of us to live.”

It takes only five minutes to learn how to make a home a healthier and safer place. For more information, visit www.unitedwayli.org/HealthyHomes
