March 5, 2020 (Deer Park) - United Way of Long Island recently received the BASF Construction North America 2019 HP+ Builder of the Year award for Innovation and Leadership in Residential Construction. The organization was acknowledged during the 2020 International Builders’ Show, in recognition of its leadership and dedication to utilizing innovative building science practices. Houses built by United Way of Long Island are particularly unique. These high performance, all electric houses run entirely from solar energy – hot water, ventilation, electric, heating and cooling systems - and are controlled with SmartTechnology resulting in the lowest possible operating costs. They are constructed with non-toxic materials, use technology that provides superior insulation and a continuous flow of purified air, all while utilizing the principles of Universal Design, which allows residents to age in place safely.

The not-for-profit has received five awards from the U.S. Department of Energy for its commitment to building energy-efficient, high-performing and affordable homes. Ten projects are currently underway, each a certified Zero Energy Ready Home.
