Camps can play a vital role to parents and children through nutritional support, educational programs, and leadership that promote good health and physical activity. Children (and adults) need nutritious food, but they also need education to learn how to adapt and adopt a healthy eating style.
In partnership with Pronto Long Island, the United Way team helped children in summer camp learn to like foods that are good for them by presenting good choices in a fun, safe environment. A nutritionist talked to them about making healthy decisions when buying food and snacks, and through a series of fun activities like a scavenger hunt, they were inspired to look at food differently.
There was also a Healthy Snack Spinner Wheel that one child said was “the best part of camp.” At the end of the six-day program, children received Fitbits to motivate them throughout the year, as well as Stop & Shop gift cards to find healthy options with their parents at the grocery store.
Thank you, Nestlé Health Science, for helping us empower children and their families to make good food and nutrition choices.
