United Way of Long Island Partnered with Long Island Organizations and Stuffed School Buses with More than 70,000 School Supplies for Children in Need

In an effort to help school children in need on Long Island, the United Way of Long Island (UWLI) has partnered with three Long Island bus transportation companies (Educational Bus Transportation, Suffolk Transportation Services, and Huntington Coach Corporation) to collect more than 70,000 school supplies from more than 50 companies on Long Island, to provide school supplies to more than 3,000 local children. Supplies were delivered to four school districts including the Town of Babylon, Town of Islip and the Town of Huntington. The school districts were chosen by the bus transportation companies that have funded the UWLI Stuff-A-Bus program in 2014.

This year, 50 generous organizations from across Long Island contributed school supplies such as backpacks, lunch boxes, notebooks, pocket folders, pens, pencils, markers, pencil cases, crayons, highlighters, glue sticks, scissors, rulers, and hand wipes.

United Way of Long Island would like to thank all of the organizations who helped our children start this school year on the right track. Follow this link to view a list of companies that participated in the 2014 Stuff-A-Bus program. We would also welcome the organizations that joined the Stuff-A-Bus program for the first time this year. Please follow this link to view a list of companies that are new to the Stuff-A-Bus program in 2014. Finally, we would like to thank the organizations who have been with us from the beginning. The Stuff-A-Bus program would also not be possible without the bus companies who generously donated the use of their buses and provided drivers to help deliver the school supplies and Make it Count Foundation who donated hundreds of backpacks. “The bottom line is that we are providing both the basic and necessary school supplies for these children to learn, and the backpack component relates directly to children in need being able to be proud that they too have a new backpack for school,” said John Corrado, President of Suffolk Transportation Services.

The Schools were highly receptive and grateful for the generous donations. “It is evident that United Way of Long Island cares about the communities in which they serve,” said Brenda Jackson, Principal of Cordello Avenue Elementary School in Central Islip. “Your contribution and assistance was valued by all of us. This donation will further allow us to better assist our children.”
